| | C-Cap - How it worksThe C-Cap chimney cap is a robust, high quality product manufactured from 'Styrosun' and is designed to fit any standard design round chimney pot, up to 280mm external diameter.
Fitting (or removal) is simple and takes seconds, requiring no special skills. However, gaining access to pots should only be undertaken by a suitably experienced person using appropriate access equipment.
• Pots need to be in sound condition. Any cracked pot should either be replaced or suitably bound to accept lateral pressure from the retaining spring wires.
• The C-Cap is for use on redundant, disused chimneys only. Care needs to be taken that capping is not carried out to any flue that is still in use. Check it first!
• As with any capping, the flue should preferably be swept clean and any obstruction (e.g. bird's nests) removed.
• C-Cap has been site-tested over 10 years and in severe gale conditions from Cornwall to the Orkneys.

| | Why should I bother to Cap my Chimney?
Left uncapped, disused chimneys are prone to a number of major problems arising from exposure to the elements and blockage by nesting birds.
Fitting a C-Cap provides instant protection against these problems, potentially saving hundreds of pounds on costly repairs. Fitting takes seconds and can readily be carried out by any local contractor, chimney sweep etc. with the necessary equipment for roof access.
The Building Research Establishment (BRE) recommends disused chimneys should be capped off at the top with a ventilated capping.
Where a disused chimney is left uncapped, it is open to the UK weather, which annually can be relied upon to deposit several feet depth of water down the average chimney. This can give rise to damp stains appearing internally and over time it contributes to steady internal deterioration of the fabric of the stack.
Blockage of the chimney by nesting rooks will not stop the rain getting in but it will tend to trap the moisture in the chimney by blocking ventilation and preventing the moisture from drying out.
Not to mention the dreadful unhygienic mess that nesting rooks can cause and the difficulty of removing the nests once established!

I phoned you up and you recommended any of the anti down draught cowls you sell so I bought the brewer aerodyne. Fitted it this weekend, the first weekend of no rain or wind, took me about two hours at the top of a roof ladder standing on my tip toes to remove the old cowl which was cemented in place, 5 minutes to fit yours. Came down and lit a fire and no down draught! Tonight you can hear the wind whistling through the cowl but no down draft.
